Filming Delay

My group and I were set to film the project on March 18th; however, due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus, our schools have closed, and are encouraging us to stay in doors basically in quarantine. So, unfortunately, my group and I won’t be able to film our final project till further notice.

Location

For the location of the film, my group and I decided that it should be filmed in the Alice Wainwright Park in Coconut Grove.

I thought the park would be a very good location since it is a public place it is easier for us to film without causing much trouble. Besides, a bunch of teens normally hang put in the park around sunset, so it is conventional for us. Also, when it gets darker the park creates these shadows of the trees and makes the place feel creepy, as if you are lost in the woods. It creates the mysterious feeling I would like to convey to the audience in the film.

Taylor

For the character of Taylor we had come up with the idea that it was going to be a boy.

However, in almost every single movie there is the heterosexual couple that are infatuated with each other.

So, to challenge the conventions of the genre, we decided to make Taylor a girl that is in a relationship with Riley.

It will not only challenge the conventions of horror, but also it will sort of be targeted to a larger audience that are part of the community; with the hopes that they will feel represented.

Even though Taylor ends up dying in the first few minutes of the film, Riley is still an outed proud lesbian, so she will carry on as the movie progresses. Also, to challenge the stereotypical wrong assumptions that every lesbian is butch and very manly, we decided to make her feminine and cute.

What Are Shot Lists For?

The purpose of a shot list is to document the list of shots to be filmed during the production of a film.

Each shot needs to receive a number, starting with number 1. They can’t have the same number or they will be confusing for the cameraman. Further, the shots are not in order of filming, during the shooting schedule process the shots will be arranged in order.

It is important to take into consideration the following:

  • Character in the shot
  • Type of shot
  • Camera movement
  • Important actions
  • Important objects

Having the storyboard done makes the shot list process easier since it allows the director and cinematographer to visualize the shot and agree on the camera movement as well.

How to Storyboard

I have watched these videos to understand more profoundly how to make a storyboard to apply it when I make it for my film’s introduction.

A storyboard is a graphic organizer that plans a narrative. They are a powerful way to visually tell a story and present information. They are a set of sequential drawings to tell a story.

Just as they are used in movie-making and animation, storyboards are also used by advertising agencies for commercials, directors for plays, and artists for comics.

Jurassic Park‘s Storyboard (not official)
Inception‘s Storyboard (not official)

By using storyboards, directors can better plan out the camera angles, setting, props, actors, and special effects to be more industrious during production. It can also help check to see if the script makes sense and allows you to correct some errors before they are to expensive to correct.

Film projects that benefit from story boarding:

  • Commercials
  • TV shows
  • Feature films
  • Independent films
  • YouTube videos
  • Instructional videos

Wardrobe

The typical wardrobe for slasher horror films tend to have the main cast distinguishable with the time period of the film. With the attempt to make the audience relate to the characters they expect to have mainstream fashion and media.

The most important asset with costume is that the main villain/ killer defines who they are, and usually relates to the way they act.

The killers quite often tend to dress really raggedy as if they don’t care for their appearance, and they are never seen wearing anything fashionable.

So, the villain in the movie is Flint. I am going to have him wear black to connote that he is evil and the bad guy, even though the audience doesn’t know. But to sort of challenge the conventional raggedy look, he is going to look good and clean, like a normal teen that likes to hang out with his friends.

Abby is sort of the “dumb blonde” character, so she is going to be wearing something cute and girly, something with pink to connote to her femininity.

Jordan is just a normal chill guy, he is going to wear what most kids wear at the moment, just a T-shirt with joggers, plain and simple.

Riley is in a relationship with Taylor, so to symbolize her innocence and infatuation she is going to be wearing white, with something red as well, to symbolize romance.

Taylor is the one that is going to get killed, so he is going to be wearing red to highlight the fact that he is in danger, also the color red connotes to blood.
